JANUS is developing a new generation of modular, secure and interoperable applications to make satellites more autonomous, flexible and reconfigurable platforms.
The JANUS – Joint Architecture for Novel, Universal satAPPs project is part of the European ISOS (In-Space Operations and Services) pilot mission and contributes to the development of Europe's future in-space infrastructure and services. Launched in June 2026 and running for 36 months, the project aims to mature the technologies developed to TRL 6 through a ground demonstration campaign.
JANUS is developing a portfolio of satAPPs: modular, plug-and-play software and hardware components that can be deployed, reused and combined across different satellite missions.
The applications focus on four key capabilities: distributed data processing between space and ground (CogniAPP), secure and resilient information exchange (ResiAPP), autonomous task orchestration (OrchestrAPP-Core), and distributed cognitive infrastructure management (OrchestrAPP-HDI).
The goal is to progressively transform satellites into autonomous service nodes, capable of sharing resources and information, adapting to operational needs and supporting different applications throughout their missions.
Planetek Italia coordinates the JANUS project and leads the European consortium. It is responsible for the overall system architecture, the development of the distributed hybrid infrastructure, and the integration activities leading to the final ground demonstration.
The project also brings together complementary expertise from across the D-Orbit Group: Planetek Hellas contributes to requirements definition, operational scenarios and exploitation activities, while D-Orbit Portugal leads the development of solutions for secure and resilient data exchange.
The JANUS consortium brings together European expertise in Earth Observation, edge/HPC computing, cybersecurity, autonomy and space systems engineering: Planetek Italia (coordinator), Planetek Hellas, D-Orbit Portugal, D-Orbit, AIKO, iBOSS, Ubotica Technologies and CYSEC France.
