KOPERNIKUS the new name of EU GMES programKopernikus is the new name of the European Commission’s earth observation activities previously known as GMES (Global Monitoring for Environment and Security) so far.
The name Kopernikus was announced by Commission Vice-President Günter Verheugen, today at a dedicated conference in Lille, organised in cooperation with the French presidency of the EU.
The objective of Kopernikus is to monitor the state of the environment on land, at sea and in the atmosphere and to improve the security of the citizens in a world facing an increased risk of natural and other disasters.

GEOEYE-1: launched for the highest resolutionGeoEye-1, the world`s highest resolution commercial Earth-imaging satellite, has been launched last September 6, 2008. GeoEye-1 is capable of collecting up to 700,000 square km in a single day, with a ground resolution of 0.41-meters in the panchromatic mode and of 1.65-m resolution multispectral.
GeoEye-1 will now undergo a calibration and check-out period before imagery products will be available for sale.
