    Vanguard-1, 50 years in orbit

    On March 17th, 1958 the Vanguard-1 was launched and is the oldest still orbiting Earth, though there is no longer any communication with it. It was the first satellite to be solar powered and was used to obtain geodetic measurements. It revealed that the earth is slightly pear-shaped rather than round.

    Another step forward for the European Earth Observation programme GMES. ESA and EU signed an agreement which establishes the allocation of €624 mln budget for the development and delivery of the space infrastructure (the Sentinels) of the GMES programme. GMES will provide accurate, up-to-date and globally-available information on an operational basis to European, national, regional and local entities, enabling them to develop services and applications related to land, sea/ocean and atmospheric monitoring as well as to emergency response and security.

    Only 48 hours after UNOSAT, a United Nations operational programme, contacted Infoterra GmbH`s teams, the company`s experts were able to deliver a readily processed high-resolution radar image acquired by the new German radar satellite TerraSAR-X. Heavy rainfall had caused severe flooding in Bolivia, killing more than 60 and leaving over 40.000 people homeless by February 2008.

    Satellite GeoEye-1 scheduled to launch in August

    GeoEye, Inc.
