Our Cities like hot hells of cement

The Italian Research Council (CNR) has recently published a study about "temperatures distribution in Rome", using remote sensing technologies and techniques. The study revealed that about 90% of the entire city area is covered by buildings or roads and some areas are affected by very high temperatures (around 60 celsius degrees). The data have been collected by the Multispectral Infrared Visible Imaging Spectrometer (Mivis). The study shows how temperature level is a consequence of urban area coverage: higher if there is a lack of green areas and waters, known as a heat mitigation elements. International Charter on "Space and Major Disasters"

Following the UNISPACE III conference held in Vienna in July 1999, the major national space agencies worldwide (ESA, CNES, CSA, NOAA, ISRO, CONAE, JAXA, USGS and CNSA) initiated the International Charter "Space and Major Disasters". The International Charter is now formally operational and aims at providing a unified system of space data acquisition and delivery to those affected by natural or man-made disasters through Authorized Users. Institutional users can request the mobilization of the space and associated ground resources to obtain data and information on a disaster occurrence. Solely in the month of August, the Charter has helped Greece, Paraguay, Mexico, North Korea, Peru, Vietnam, India, Canary Islands and the United Kingdom cope with natural disasters.
