Technology gives a hand to save gorillasIt`s called SOGHA (Surveillance of Gorillas Habitat) and it`s a project born thanks to an agreement between Planetek Italia and the European Space Agency, with the participation of the Unesco. The project objective is the protection of gorillas. A pilot project for the protection of about 630 gorillas and the forests in which they live. The area of interest, for which Planetek Italia provides data processed with ER Mapper and integrated in a GIS, is included between Ruanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Thanks to the mediation of Planetek Italia, Earth Resource Mapping has donated an ER Mapper licence to the International Gorilla Conservation Programme (IGCP).

Remote sensing for agricultural resources
Farmers and satellites to control cultivation of tomato . This is the idea generated by the CON.CO.O.SA co-operative of Salerno and implemented by Planetek Italia. The project has allowed to define a procedure for the certification of tomato fields, using Landsat satellite images.

Planetek Italia & MondoGIS: a partnership for trainingTo spread the use of satellite technologies for real application, Planetek Italia and MondoGIS came to an agreement to provide several courses designed expressly as quality training.
The courses, that will be held at the Geolab in Rome, are organized in a theoretical part integrated with practical exercises. The aim is both to transfer a method to process high resolution satellite images (e.g., Ikonos and Quick Bird) to the participants; and to provide specific skills in the field of the integration of remote sensing in Geographic Information System. The events for the end of 2002 are the "Course on the use of remote sensing to study the evolution of urban areas" (1st edition, from 18th to 22th November); and the "GIS & Remote Sensing Course" (7th edition, from 9th to 13th December). -
Two days in Rome to learn how to use ER Mapper
It will be held in Rome, on the 17th and 18th October, the course to use ER Mapper, the image processing software for satellite images and airphotos. The course organized by Planetek Italia, is designed for professionals, researchers, students and users in a need of deepen advanced knowledge regarding the tools for the image processing, compression and integration of data in GIS, CAD and Office products. The above will be achieved through exercises and practical applications.

ER Mapper: now available the release 6.3Earth Resource Mapping has released the new version of ER Mapper, the powerful image processing software. The upgrade is available for free for users with a current maintenance contract. Here is a list of the main new features of the product: support for Win XP, improvements in color balancing, new HDF Import Wizard and Aster Exploration Wizard, new import/export procedures for shape files, new Export Raster translator, the formula Spectral Angle Mapper, support for new datum and projections.
